Jagex moderator fired for stealing 45 billion coins from Old School Runescape participant (Updated)

Update: Jagex has issued an announcement stating that no credit card or banking information was dropped as a consequence of the breach. "Further to RS Gold yesterday's statement, we can affirm that none of our players' card or bank details were jeopardized," it said. "We work with an industry-respected, entirely compliant third-party processor, to intentionally avoid staff using players' full card or bank details. This applies when players choose to store their details at payment period for any future purchases. Jagex undergoes regular, third-party testing to make sure we keep the highest security standards"

A couple of months before, an Old School Runescape player who goes by mazrim_lol on Reddit maintained a"serious data breach" had caused him to shed 45 billion coins onto his main account. His claims had been dismissed by numerous other players, several of whom indicated that it was his own fault for not having the account correctly fastened, or that he may be lying around it completely. But it came to light now he wasn't lying, and that he was right regarding the data breach, which was actually an inside job at Jagex. "We affirm that a Member of The Old School Team has been dismissed from job at Jagex subsequent gross misuse of moderator privileges," Jagex said in a statement posted today. "Throughout our rigorous regular system tests, intermittent activity was identified on limited number of accounts, including the motion of wealth and items back into the live match "

"Following our investigation, we were able to solve the issue prior to any substantial effect was made into the broader match, or economy. We have also taken measures to return things and GP to any affected accounts. Whilst we generally do not return items or stone, we believe that given this unusual situationwe wanted to guarantee no players lost out into the rogue actions of a member of staff"

Jagex added that it's"working together with the authorities" concerning the episode --45 billion coins has significant real-world value--but said it couldn't offer additional specifics. However, according to the Resetera thread that the worker in question is Jed Sanderson, aka Mod Jed, who may actually have murdered in excess of 100 billion coins in total, worth over $100,000 on gold-selling markets. He's also reportedly involved with the Reign of Terror clan, which was accused of using DDoS attacks to slow opponents in championships, such as a $20,000 championship that occurred in September of this past year. Jagex said in the very time that its investigation had found no evidence of wrongdoing from Sanderson, but in the aftermath of all this I expect that it will be taking another look.

In a followup post, Mazrim_lol shared a picture of a message he received from Jagex Player Service, informing him that, due to the"rare circumstances" of the situation, it's made a decision to restore his lost wealth. "We take things in this way very serious and, as such, we'd like to Buy OSRS Gold assure you that we've taken steps to make sure that an incident like this won't happen again," Jagex wrote. Happily, Mazrim_lol is taking his vindication graciously:"Each of the redditors who spent ages telling me I had been just lax with security can suck a fat one," he wrote.
